Immediately after her family medicine residency at Duke University (board certified 1979 to present), Dr. Bowman served as a Medical Officer in the Public Health Service, working in the Health Resources Administration of the Bureau of Health Professions of the Department of Health and Human Services and as an instructor for the Uniformed University of the Health Sciences. Concurrently, Dr. Bowman earned her Masters of Public Administration and subsequently her second Board Certification in Preventive Medicine. She was an Assistant Dean and residency director at Georgetown University, then Department Chair of Family and Community Medicine at Bowman Gray School of Medicine (Wake Forest University) for 10 years prior to coming to Penn. Dr. Bowman currently edits the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine and the Yearbook of Family Practice. She was previously on the board of editors of JAMA and is now on the editorial board of the Merck Manual. She is widely published in areas related to behavior change of physicians and patients, women physicians, women's health, and nutrition. Her most recent published book is the third edition of Women in Medicine: Life and Career Management. Dr. Bowman is a former President of the American Board of Family Practice and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. She has served on multiple accreditation related site visits, and state and national government and organization committees. Dr. Bowman was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 1993.
