Dr. Coffin’s research activities focus on the epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases and nosocomial infections. A current project funded by CDC is examining pediatric influenza and 1) the burden of disease, 2) the epidemiology of risk factors associated with serious infection 3) the complications associated with community and nosocomial influenza infections, and 4) the direct healthcare costs. She is also completing a multicenter study funded by the CDC to evaluate a clinical algorithm designed to facilitate the accurate diagnosis of children with rash illnesses. Additional ongoing projects include 1) the epidemiology and microbiology of community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus, 2) the risk factors for fungal and resistant bacterial infections in hospitalized children, and 3) the epidemiology of rotavirus gastroenteritis.
